Barry Sutton came into the NFT space with a splash. His genesis collection 96° in the Shade launched on Aug 11, 2021 with no marketing or pre-launch publicity. With the support of photographer Justin Aversano and uber-collector gmoney, the collection of 100 works sold out instantly. Since its launch the project has achieved a sort of cult status among collectors and has been a fixture on the top 20 all-time list of NFT photography projects.

NYC365 is a collection of 365 photographs he has been making in the city since arriving to NY in 2008. The collection includes several chapters and subcategories such as chronology, streets, subway, winter, clouds, protests, portraits and bikes. It also includes camera data where available and a special category of images shot with the Hipstamatic app on his iPhone in his first year in the city. The collection contains six slow-motion and time-lapse videos.

“These early iPhone images are quite interesting to look back on because being new to the city, I was naturally drawn to some of the iconic monuments- the things I’ve always associated with NYC- the Empire State Building and other architecture, the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center, the bustle of the streets during rush hour, the fashionable people. You can see a natural evolution of my vision and where my eye began to re-focus as the years go on.”

But this collection is much more than a documentary record of New York City. Barry’s discerning eye looks hard for something surprising in the shadows and spaces, humor, irony, empathy, humanity. While the influence of photographers like Paul Strand, Walker Evans and Gary Winograd lie deep beneath the surface, these pictures also echo the surrealist literary work of Haruki Murakami and the deep brooding sounds of Leonard Cohen.

NYC365 is unique in its broad variety and specificity- 365 being a reference to the nature of this daily practice. Each of the photographs stands on its own irrespective of context. Yet when seen together, this body of work reads as a story of curiosity, discovery and enchantment, generous in its breadth of inquiry, open to whatever surprises may be waiting around the next corner- a journey to the unexpected.
